Job Title:                              Fiber Optic Engineer (Sioux Falls Area)

Reports to:                         Sr. Manager of Broadband Network

FLSA Status:                       Non-exempt

Manage, service, repair, and installation of fiber communication network and components.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Perform all tasks and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner
  • Engineer aerial, underground, and inside fiber optic routes, road moves
  • Route planning and design, Utility coordination, Easement acquisitions
  • Fiber assignment and network resource management
  • Oversee projects and interactions between both in-house and contractor design/build agents
  • Support project timeline, budgets, and reporting metrics
  • Assist in training activities
  • Assure system security by following company procedures  
  • Provide superior customer service
  • Complete all tasks to Vast Broadband quality standards
  • Represent Vast Broadband in a competent and professional manner to all customers, associates, and outside organizations
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior at all times
  • Maintain excellent attendance
  • Perform plant serviceability surveys
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include cross functional assignments
  • Must have the ability to operate a utility locator for verifying fiber cables and paths

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plans and prepares drawings for new construction, removal or rearrangement of existing aerial or underground lines, cable and conduits, circuit design and cutover assignments
  • Ability to assess and interpret highly complicated project plans and determine scope of work. After assessment, create list of options for recommendation to client
  • Assist in research and application of new technologies and products
  • Review final test results for construction and electronic projects
  • Selects routing of lines and determines equipment requirements as appropriate
  • Prepares detailed construction and installation drawings and estimates equipment, labor, and material costs
  • Oversees and inspects installation of optical fiber networks to ensure construction jobs are completed in a timely and accurate manner and in compliance with project plans and specifications
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by management
  • Ability to travel as necessary to assigned locations

  • Knowledge of telecommunications construction and engineering practices and principles such as RUS, NESC, etc.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations affection engineering projects
  • Knowledge of copper and fiber Circuit design and cutover assignments
  • Knowledge of company products and services
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures
  • Highly skilled in operation various office equipment such as personal computer, various software programs and telephone telecommunications systems
  • Skill in problem identification and resolution
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical documents and forms including work orders, staking sheets, schematics and specification manuals
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to make sound decisions using information at hand
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record


Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Basic knowledge of electronics and working knowledge of the operation of a fiber network are required. Two to four years of experience and related associates degree (or equivalent in training and experience) is preferred

Computer Skills:

Computer skills are required including internet and e-mail, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.
