Job Description

Job Title: HUB ENGINEER I

Reports to: SR MGR BROADBAND NETWORK              

FLSA Status: Exempt          

Department: Technical Operations

The Hub Engineer is responsible for the reception processing, and distribution of off-air, satellite, microwave and tape originated programming to the outside plant utilizing coaxial cable, microwave, and fiber optic transmission technologies. This includes the installation, construction, operation, and repair of all equipment associated with the Headend and signal distribution network. Hub Engineers are expected to assist the NOC and Technical Support organizations in isolating and repairing video, voice, and data services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install and Maintain Broadband Headend Systems
  • Assist in installation and maintenance of broadband data systems
  • Assist in provisioning of new and existing network elements
  • Assist in installing, operating and maintaining the Digital Broadband Delivery System (DBDS, Cisco DNCS, Arris DAC)
  • Perform FCC proof of performance testing and maintain associated documentation
  • Maintain Headend Emergency Alert Systems and documentation
  • Preparation of Test/Evaluation Procedures, Operation Guidelines, Reports etc
  • Configuring and maintaining HUB hardware including, RF combining networks, satellite receivers, modulators, edge qams, EAS equipment, RF transmitters/receivers and other associated Headend equipment including sparing
  • Working overnight maintenance windows and on-call as needed
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior at all times
  • Maintain excellent attendance
  • Responsible for motor vehicle per company policy including equipment & tool inventory, vehicle security and vehicle maintenance

  • Able to present technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to accurately measure distances using tapes and other measuring devices
  • Able to use assigned test equipment including but not limited to signal level meter (SLM), leakage detector, volt ohm meter, sweep receiver, underground locater and TDR
  • Able to prioritize and organize assignments and responsibilities
  • Able to accurately maintain records, logs, reports, work orders, etc.
  • Able to operate office equipment, fax, copier, etc.
  • Able to handle escalations and time-critical issues
  • Able to read street maps and system design prints.
  • Able to work flexible hours as required including evenings, weekends and on-call shifts
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record

Education/Experience:

Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. One to two years of experience in the broadband communication field preferred.

Computer Skills:

Basic computer skills are required including internet and e-mail.

  • Ability to lift up to 90 pounds
  • Physically able to work computer equipment and test equipment
  • Ability to work in environments that may have dust, dirt, noise, insects and cleaning solutions
  • Ability to work safely near power lines and electrical equipment
  • Ability to drive Company vehicles in a safe manner
  • Must be able to meet the physical limit requirements of personal protective equipment, aerial lift equipment, ladders and/or gaffs that may be used in this position.
